The US Men’s National Soccer team faced off against Ghana in the World Cup in Brazil on June 16. After losing to Ghana in the past TWO World Cup matchups, the US wanted this win desperately. They did it! Not only did the US come away with a victory, but they also looked good doing it!
USA & Ghana: World Cup 2014 — US Soccer Team Wins 2-1 In World Cup Debut
The US team triumphed in their 30th World Cup appearance. From the moment the game began, it was inspiring and intense! US player Clint Dempsey scored in the game after just 31 seconds. The team was ahead until the 82nd minute, when Ghana’s Andre Ayew scored an amazing goal for his team.
It was all tied up with not a lot of time left on the clock. And with about four minutes remaining, John Brooks made the goal that ultimately snagged the US win!
All-star player Jozy Altidore, 24, had a major injury during the game, but that didn’t stop the US team — which is currently 13th in the FIFA ranking positions, according to FIFA – from fighting on. We couldn’t be prouder of our boys!
US Soccer Team’s History With Ghana
This isn’t the first time the US team has taken on Ghana. In the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team lost to the African nation in the first of 16 rounds, 1-2. Ghana also knocked the US out of the World Cup in 2006 — no wonder US coach Jurgen Klinsmann said today’s game was a “must-win.”
We’re so glad the US team was able to break Ghana’s winning streak!
